What did we learn from 2007-08: Many consumer advocates were watching the adjustable rate mortgage resets, 40-year mortgages, and the subprime marketplace. Add to that credit card consumption, return to increasing personal bankruptcy, and continued potential FHA product default risk. There is a balance of woe to monitor; we tried to turn customers away from these products, and ultimately offered solutions to managing these obligations until better solutions arrived (still waiting). Yet remember, the options to resolve without a consumer taking control and ownership of poor decisions are just more bandaids.

MitiGate, Inc. is a mortgage and consumer financial education consulting firm.
